High Levels of Solar Radiation

Although beneficial in aiding the production of vitamin D within humans, high levels of solar radiation negatively impacts the survival of humans by disturbing homeostasis, or more specifically, damaging and/or rapidly changing skin cells. This damage can begin as a sunburn, and has the potential to be more destructive each time a sunburn occurs. Which later can result in chronic hyper-pigmentation, or even cancer.
Humans have developed a short term adaptation to high solar radiation-the reddening of the skin, in varying degrees up to and including sunburn.

Another adaptation to solar radiation of a more facultative nature is tanning. When one is exposed in shorter lengths of time to solar radiation, melanin synthesis occurs, temporarily thickening a layer of their epidermis, and producing the appearance of darker skin in a localized area.

Humans who lived close to the equator, with the highest level of exposure to solar radiation, were found to adapt to this stress through the permanent darkening of skin's pigmentation.

The benefit of studying human variation across various clines is that it removes prejudice or other possible stereotypes from the equation, leaving only objective results and expands our test group.  It also allows us to see any potential benefits of this environmental stress, such as vitamin D increases due to exposure to solar radiation.
The use of race to understand human variation, especially related to the study of solar radiation, would just be a redundant restatement of the question. Skin color is simply a more concentrated pigmentation due to these environmental factors. These influences provide a static foundation for analysis across the variety of humans, instead of promoting a changing test group...much more accurate and objective.

Language Blog Post

Part 1:
This week I was in a 15 minute conversation where I was not allowed to speak. This conversation was harder than expected because I am a person who is very verbal, enthusiastic and bold about expressing my thoughts. Having said all this, these 15 minutes felt like a never ending conversation for me. I chose to have my conversation with my parents and little sister—without the speaking part.  When I began trying to express my thoughts through physical expressions, my parents seemed lost and very confused, when my father finally laughed at me saying, “it was awkward because we couldn’t communicate verbally, which comes natural to us”. My little sister was getting very confused she wanted to know why I couldn’t just talk to her instead of acting out my thoughts. When I was using gestures to communicate with my sister it brought me to the feeling of when she was a baby. I had to use so many hand gestures and movements to connect with her because that was her “language”. I felt like I was a baby trying to communicate with a parent. After an extensive five minutes, my parents eventually altered their way of communicating with me; using hand gestures and speaking slowly (as if I really did speak another language). I feel that if we represented two different cultures meeting for the first time that I would have had the advantage in communicating complex ideas. I think that the speaking culture would have a “snobby” and maybe even irritated attitude towards the culture that doesn’t use language because they know what they are trying to communicate but all they are getting in response would be antics. Babies and toddlers, everywhere, have difficulty communicating with spoken language and it affects adults and older children that do interact with them.  As adults we try to interact with babies by overly expressing our emotions and speaking slowly and loudly to convey our feelings and words. In the experiment, this is how my parents were trying to convey their thoughts to me while I couldn’t speak. I definitely felt like a baby.
Part 2:
In the second half of the experiment, I engaged in another 15 minute conversation, however this time without any physical signals, vocal intonation or body/facial movements. I could not last the entire 15 minutes this time. This experiment was very difficult for me because I naturally use a lot of body and facial expressions to communicate often. Every two minutes I realized I would raise and lower my voice or smile.  I carried on this conversation with my parents. My mother said, “I lost all track of what we were talking about because of your monotonous tone…it was really boring...sorry”. This experiment “speaks” for itself .  Signs are so important to our language and our ability to communicate effectively. These “non-speech language techniques” play a large role in our communication on so many levels; it’s how we read others body language and how we are able to adapt to others emotions and antics while they speak. It pushes our language farther than just words, its feelings, passions, and insights.  There are many people who do, however have difficulty reading body language. I think it might be the way they grew up—maybe they weren’t social or brought up in a manner to think much of body language. I think an environmental condition that might have a benefit to not reading body language would be in the coldest places on Earth; where no one would want to stand in the freezing cold to move their faces or open their arms while speaking, allowing the cold to take hold of them.
Overall, I felt that this experiment relates to the old saying, “Actions speak louder than words”

The Piltdown Hoax Blog Post

The Piltdown ‘human remains’ hoax was found in South East England in the early 1900’s. This piece of fossil was found by a labor who then gave it to Charles Dawson, an amateur archaeologist. This piece of fossil was given a thought to be the missing link to Darwin’s theory. Dawson then met a geologist, Sir Arthur Woodward and an anatomist, Arthur Keith and Telihard.  In February, 1912 Dawson published his discoveries and his thought about how it have the evidence of human-like teeth and an ape-like jaw bone. Because of this it caused the scientific community in uproar. For England this was a great find, they finally can have a proof that they also have old human-ape-like fossils found in their land. However, in 1949 they tested the fluorine content of the fossil and found out that the age of the fossil is less than 100 years old. They also found an artificial stain and the teeth had been filled on the fossil. In the end they found out that the fossil belonged to a female orangutan whose teeth had been filled so it will look like a human-like teeth. Big suspicion was given to Charles Dawson who was thought wanted to make it to the high class of scientific society. Dawson also found many other fossils with the same artificial stain found in the Piltdown’s fossil. In the end the discovery was just a Hoax. It did not have any connection between human and ape at all.

The mistake was in how prideful and desperate was England. They wanted to proof that man’s origins was from Britain by claiming that the fossil could be the oldest human-like fossil. They also wanted to rise up even higher and wanted to use this discoveries in their politics tactic as well. They probably did not even bother to check and analyze the fossil many more times whether if was really a fossil that could have be the missing link to Darwin’s theory. But by the end this arrogance of England brought their scientific prestige to a lower place.

The positive aspect in here is that when the more modern scientist were able to date the skull and developed a better techniques so that they could avoid a fraud. The scientist use fluorine to determine the age of the object by timing the duration of how long the object would absorb the fluorine and chemical that were able to show the artificial stains in the skull and a more advance microscope. They also use the scientific methods to question whether if the skull could really be from and ape-human-like.

The human factor in the case of Piltdown Hoax should be able to be removed because at that time advance chemical and advance things weren’t available for them and the one who conduct the experiments were conducted purely by human alone. The human factor are much reduced in today’s science because we now have technologies that would do an experiment in the most precise measure and this reduce the error margin in the science community.
The life lesson from this hoax is that we should check into something as important as the discovery some more than others. Also how pride or arrogance should not be involved in science because it brought down the pride at the end.

A)     Lemurs only live in one part of the world and are also endangered of going extinct. They live in the untouched forests of Madagascar, which is also an island country. These forests benefit them because they provide them with foods such as: leaves, fruits, buds, bark and insects without any other competition.
B)      Lemurs locomotor pattern is jumping from tree to tree and branch to branch, while using their long tails to keep balance. Unlike their other primate relatives, lemurs don't use their tails to grip branches, instead they use their arms and legs and travel the treetops.
C)      Lemurs locomotor adaptation has been influenced by their environment tremendously. Since they are often jumping from tree to tree quickly, their arms and legs have to adapt to their swift movements. However, their legs and arms are not the only thing that has adapted, another is their tail. Their tail has adapted by giving them balance everywhere they go unlike being used as an extra limb like their primate relatives.

A)     Spider Monkeys prefer to live in the rain forests of Central and South America and are sometimes found in Mexico. They prefer this environment because they usually find their food at the treetops in the forests. Which provide them: nuts, spiders, bird eggs, fruits and leaves. When there is danger like leopards approaching, they sometimes yell and shake the tree tops to scare them away.
B)      Spider monkeys locomotor pattern is swinging using every limb in their body, hands, feet and even their tails. Their elongated fingers and abbreviated thumb helps swing through branches. Their long tails grip branches to allow them to swings across the rain forest tree tops.
C)      The Spider monkey's environment has influenced their locomotor adaptation significantly. Their long tails are an adaptation for eating as well as hanging from their tails allows them to gather food with both hands. Since spider monkeys have the ability to grip with their fingers and thumbs it allows them to get out of danger quickly and also allows them to shake the branches to scare away prey.

A)     Baboons primarily live throughout the sub-Saharan in Africa. Most are found in places with dry climates however there are also some in the rain forest. Their environment provides them: fruits, grasses, seeds, rodents and even small birds. Baboons spend most of their day on the ground but they do sleep in trees.
B)      Baboon’s locomotor pattern is walking quadrupedally, which can also be said as walking on all fours. They do not have long tails like their primate relatives however because their environment doesn’t not suit them for that. But since they are semi-terrestrial they stay on the ground during the day but when the night comes they climb up trees to sleep.
C)      Baboon’s environment plays a tremendous part in shaping their locomotor patters. As you can see since they do not live primarily in rain forest there is no need for a long tail like their relatives. But since they are on the ground most of the time they walk on all fours “quadrupedally” to be at comfort and even make them run faster.

A)     Gibbons are scattered more around the world then the previous primates. They are found on few islands, Southeast Asia and even China. Their environments that they choose to live in provide them with various types of food such as: fruits, flowers, leaves, spiders, bird eggs, and birds as well. And since they live in tree tops their environment provides them with many, where their predators cannot catch them
B)      Gibbons locomotor pattern includes brachiating, traveling from tree to tree by swinging under branches with hand over hand motion, like humans with money bars. Another locomotor pattern that they use is walking bipedally, which they use on tree branches. However the one they use more is brachiating, which they spend most of their day doing.
C)      The Gibbon’s environment as well as any other living creature out there has a great influence on their locomotor pattern. Their long arms, strong shoulders and lightweight have been adapted for means of traveling, which allows the gibbons to spend most of their lives swinging from branch to branch or walking on branches. They are rarely on the ground but when they are they have the ability to walk upright, which is an adaptation for outrunning predators. Most of their food is at the tree tops which is why they are rarely on the ground.

A)     Chimpanzees can only be found across Central Africa in the rain forests, grasslands and woodlands. And because they are vegetarians (except some males) their environment provides them with many: fruits, plants and leaves. For the males however, it isn’t hard from them to find insects, eggs and meat when wanted.
B)      The chimpanzee's locomotor pattern is mostly walking quadrupedally as well as walking upright. While walking on all fours, the chimpanzee is also called a knuckle walkers, like gorillas. The chimpanzee also has the ability to swing from tree to tree, where they do most of their eating and sleeping.
C)      The chimpanzee’s locomotion has been greatly affected by its environment. Whether they are walking in groups quadrupedally, or swinging from branch to branch, their locomotor ability is always adapting to their needs. These interchangeable traits are always working to the chimpanzee’s advantage.

I believe that all these primates studied are very similar and alike, from the foods they eat to the places they live in (trees). However they do have some differences from the way they look to the way they use their locomotive patterns. But the reason for this is because the environmental challenges and stresses they face cause them to live and adapt differently. I believe that environment has a huge impact on the way one lives and changes in traits whether it’s losing, gaining or making traits stronger from generation to generation. But I also believe many of these primates are endangered due to lack of environment and which they cannot adapt to.

1.     A – Two different species that possess a homologous trait are human and bats.
B – The trait that these two species share are their front limbs. However, each species use their limbs differently. The humans use theirs for picking up objects, eating, and having the sense of feel, while the bats use theirs to fly. The reason for the differences in this trait though are because differences in the environment, resulting in different functions and evolutionary selection pressures which is also called divergent evolution.
C – Both humans and bats are in the class Mamalia, which is reason enough to suggest that they come from a common ancestor.

1.     A – Two different species that possess an analogous trait are owls and butterflies.
B – The trait these two species share are their wings. The structure for the owls wings are covered in feathers while the butterflies are in scales, each use them to fly. The main similarity is that they both have wings and use them daily to fly.
C – If you were to go back in time you wouldn’t be able to find a common ancestor between the two because the trait is analogous and not homologous. Insects have two pairs of wings while birds have one, and insects lack bones while birds do not. Since the wings have evolved independently in each of these groups and do not show that they are closely related means that the wings trait between the two is analogous with no common ancestor.
